Worlds largest jack up rig in Haugesund
The Vetco Aibel (former HMV, UMOE, ABB) offshore yard in Haugesund has established itself as a leading building and maintainance company for the oil and gas industry. Just west of us, the North Sea has waste amounts of the black gold, oil + gas that mainly is delivered to the European market via sub sea pipelines.
This yard has built many huge constructions, among them, in 1998, the worlds largest submergible platform, Visund, operating on the rough Visund field in the North Sea. One year later, another platform almost as big as Visund left the yard, "Troll C"-platform. The huge Alvheim production ship in the dry dock at the moment has employed 1600 workers since March, and now the worlds largest jack up platform (Maersk Inspirer) will stay here almost 3 months to be upgraded.
200 thai workers are among the personell that have traveled from very far away to work on this project. They arrived Haugesund a couple of weeks ago, and have been exposed to the wettest and most windy fall weather we have ever registrated. Very different and far colder then what they are used to. But they are satisfied, and even get better thai food here than at home (due to newspaper reports. The yard has employed their own thai cooks as long as the workers are here).
Here are some pictures showing the huge construction compared to the Haugesund surroundings ( + some links below to informative articles about the different projects ):
